Resource Experience with APT Feast

Hmm I don't touch much of the pricing/logistics side of the business, so I don't really know why the prices move that much on Amazon. But I can generate a discount code for you guys to use if you buy stuff directly from the 2hr Aquarist website: 95GF77H for 15% off - this should work universally.

I've used aquasoil to cap raw soil for years. I find that this combi grows plants better than using pure aquasoil (no matter what producer). However, I found most folks not interested in the idea as it seemed messy, and there were issues with raw soil selection due to its non uniform nature, so I stopped writing about it.
Thanks Dennis! I figured you had little to do with pricing details but might be able to help with the broken discount code. Very much appreciated.

I saw it in one of your articles. I thought about trying it, but I decided not to because I was thinking I would later take down the tank and want to reuse the substrate and it would be too messy with dirt under it.
Also thanks for the discount code

Well now you have to come up with an APT soil - APT Base

Hi all,

Have been using Tropica aqua soil for a while now, but feel that it's falling apart rather quickly. From my LFS, I've understood that ADA Amazonia is the toughest quasoil and does not fall apart quickly. They were just getting started with APT Feast, but said that it was too early to say anything about the durability of APT Feast as it hasn't been available in the Netherlands for that long.

Was wondering if anyone here (or perhaps Dennis himself) can tell me there experience with the durability of APT Feast? Would be helpful if someone can compare it with ADA Amazonia V2 as well.

I have had it now for 6 months with no issues of breaking down. Tagging @Dennis Wong to see if he could comment on extended use.

Same experience as @CincyScaper .

I'm sure @Dennis Wong will have some product feedback 👍 Here's some more information on aquasol in general:

We have had very good reports on APT Feast so far, so I'm pleased with the overall user experience. It settles down more easily than other ammonia rich aquasoils like ADA's, yet preserves its grain structure well.

I have 2 year old aquasoil tanks with very little break down. I ran the top aquarium for a year, then rescaped it into the second picture. If anything, the growth in the second pic is even more exuberant even though I reused aquasoil from the tank.

One thing about aquasoil substrates is that regular enrichment and maintenance makes a huge difference in how it performs. I add 1% new aquasoil per months there abouts, and I find that this amount is enough to let plants grow as if the aquasoil was newish. More details in this guide here:

@Dennis Wong, can you comment on any inclusion of organic matter in APT Feast (or aquasoils generally)?
Organic matter is present in the raw materials used for aquasoil construction, and is also added in the form of peat. Slow decomposition of organic matter contributes some nutrients over time and organic matter also contributes to CEC and as food for microbial action. Too much organic material or overly labile materials can cause substrates to become overly anoxic, so most manufacturers will err on the side of caution.

Since we are all asking questions 😆 , I have Feast that I bought about a year ago and am not planning to use soon. I assume it is good in the bag for years if not almost indefinitely as long as it doesn't get smashed and abused. As far as you know, is the shelf life long?
yea it doesn't deteriorate much with time I think. If stored wet, I think the microbes will slowly degrade the ammonia content.

Can reconfirm it holds up very well.
I think it overall ends up buffering to 6.8 after a while as well. This was after a few months, without replenishing any soil.

I posted this elsewhere also I think, but this is how I manage APT Feast tanks nowadays (more for those with time and access to good tap water):

24 days growth comparison as the new tank settles in.

1. Did 100% water changes every 2 days for the first 2 weeks, now back to 1 a week 50% water change.
2. Replanted the adapted top portion of Rotala Roraima once it grew out, uprooted and discarded old bottom
3. Trimmed Rotala blood red 3 times by now to get better density and alignment of tops
4. Trimmed away old leaves for Lysimachia parvifolia
5. Trimmed away old leaves on Blood vomit
6. Replaced hygrophila with M. pteropus 'orange narrow'

Current Parameter readings:
Nitrate (NO3): 6ppm
Phosphates (PO4): 0.3ppm
5 dGH, <1 dKH , pH 5.2
Substrate: APT Feast aquasoil
Water column: APT3 2ml/day (starting in 3rd week)
